Chorus to theme song:

I love him the most vigorous crazy
My dream relentlessly broken off but does not forget
Offered him that tomorrow is the future
To how bad the circumstances are not willing to wake up

I love that he stumbled into despair
My heart is deeply hurt too but not forgotten
He and I no longer belong to this place
Initially the ultimate absurdity of heaven

I honestly did not get the phrase "the more you love, the more you hate" until I saw what this couple had to go through. This drama really moved me and made me fall deeper in love with it as each episode aired. Autumn's concerto has had a bigger impact on me in comparison to other melodramas because I actually watched this one weekly. I had to wait patiently for each episode to air and get subbed. Sometimes the waiting period made me anxious and about 6/7 days out of the week I spent obsessing over what was going to happen. Will Guang Xi get his memory back? Will Mu Cheng and Guang Xi's last stop really be happiness? Although the journey of this drama drained a great amount of my emotional energy, I don't regret watching it at all. The acting was amazing and I thought the director did a great job getting the best performances out of every single actor. I really don't like Taiwanese dramas all that much, but this is one of the few good ones out there.

If you're a big fan of melodramas like me and usually turn to korean dramas, try this Taiwanese one out.

East of Eden drama review

East of Eden is a very heavy, dramatic, emotionally draining drama. The synopsis appealed to me every single form when I came across it. Switched babies? Cruel fate? Suffering? There's no question that this is a melodrama through and through..and I am so there. It was also a perk knowing about 98% of the main cast from their other drama productions. I honestly do not know how the casting director was able to get so many big names to act in EOE, but props to them. The acting throughout the drama was high class because of the careful selection. At times though, the acting was too polished and it came off as overdramatic. It did take me about 6 months to finish East of Eden because I couldn’t handle watching a whole slew of episodes in one sitting. It was a little too depressing and too heavy on my feelings at times. However, I was able to get through all the tears and eventually finish it.

The writing did become a little awkward and draggy around the middle, but I think that had something to do with the new writer taking over from the one who became sick. If you paid attention close enough and knew the characters well enough, you could tell that there was a contrast between what the new writer had in mind opposed to the original one. I think because of those creative differences, it did affect the drama and did strip it of a few layers. Example, in the beginning half of the drama Dong Chul’s mom tried very hard to get him on the right track and away from the mobster life style. But in the 2nd half, after the time skip, she seemed to turn a blind eye and no longer cared. Those kinds of changes make me mad because I think it added more complexity to the storyline and gave Lee Min Sook a firmer role as a strong, bold mother who wants her child to life a righteous life. I thought it was more realistic and admirable.

However, I do not fully blame the new writer for the inconsistent writing of the drama. I think Lee Da Hae’s decision to leave in the middle of production also made a huge impact on the drama. I’m sure it was not easy for the new writer to deal with something like this in the middle of filming when they had the plot already laid out: Lee Da Hae’s character, Hye Rin, shakes up the Lee brother’s relationship. And you know what makes it even juicier...that are not even brothers! Perhaps if they continued to make love the center focus, it would have kept and drawn in more viewers. Who can honestly say why they stopped watching East of Eden except the viewer themselves. In my opinion, despite its flaws, it was definitely worth watching until the very end. The first writer got me hooked and once the second writer was comfortable she was able to reel me in.

I know I shouldn’t compare dramas, but after watching EOE this drama really paled in comparison. Despite the fact that this drama was all about heartwrenching pain, I thought it lacked the necessary soul to make it believable. Characters would say pretty things that would usually make me tear up, but oddly enough I didn’t feel the urge to cry once while watching this drama. What came out of their mouths seemed unbelievable 75% of the time because I do not believe that the characters were fully developed. In particular, they should have taken more time showing the history of Cho-In, Sun-Woo and Seo-Yeon. Their complex relations are the key to the whole story. Don’t tell me what their relationships were like, show it to me. Seo-Yeon is Cho-In’s heart? Show me. Seo-Yeon is really torn between the two brothers? Show me. Sun-Woo and Cho-In had a solid brotherhood before that Seon-Yeon’s concert? Show me. It would have made the character struggles much more believable if we actually saw what type of people they use to be. Actions do speak louder than words.

Honestly, if you are looking for a good revenge drama I would pass on this one. I only continued watching this drama because of the cast, in particular the charismatic So Ji Sub. I don’t think the actors let us down with this one, I think the producers did.

Soulmate drama review

Naming a drama "soulmate" in my opinion is very bold. And I wanted to see what this daring writer had to offer. Sadly though, as I got further into the drama I became really disappointed with the developments. The beginning of the drama was fairly good, but it I felt it fell short with the "build-up" of Soo-Kyung and Dong-Wook's relationship. I can't say I was able to get behind them 100% or felt their pain because it all happened too fast. I wasn't expecting a slow developing melodrama here, but I thought it would be handled with more care and would have been written more seriously than it actually was. They handled the aspect of soulmates in a very silly manner. Too many cheesy scenes + bad acting = a hurt stomach. And there was surely enough of them...

This drama is not horrible by any means, it just does not suit my personal taste.

It had its moments of brilliance, but overall I felt like I was watching a half-baked revenge centered drama. It had too many faults. Go Soo’s great acting was the only thing that kept me watching until the end. I thought the way they developed Lee Jung-Hyun as an individual character was great. It was interesting to see how his pure soul slowly darkened as he was forced to hide in the shadows to prove his innocence. The first 10 episodes were the best, but after that it seemed as if the “cake” had been taken out. It had great potential, but the writers did not meet it sadly.

I would not recommend this to someone who wants to see a good drama centered around revenge, let alone romance. The character downfall was great, but the re-establishment failed terribly. Sorry, but that’s just my opinion. :(

There’s still one episode left to watch, but I don’t think I need to view it in order to wrap up my feelings regarding this drama. Cinderella Unni was a pretty good drama, overall. The writer did a great job at showing all different degrees of love. In Korean dramas, I usually find the second leads annoying, but in this drama I found all the character dynamics and relations interesting. It has been a long time since I’ve seen such deliciously complex, dark and compelling characters that I can actually relate to on a human level. The acting all around was top-notch, especially from our two female leads Moon Geun Young and Seo Woo. The writer wasn’t able to make me genuinely care about the KH and EJ’s love story, but she succeeded in getting me to care about the future of the Song/Goo family. Their family dynamic was the biggest WIN in this drama for me.

Overall, this drama was pretty weak in the romance and plot department. The characters do redeem it a great deal, but I do not believe Cinderella's Sister met its full potential....

7/10.

One Litre of Tears is a beautiful drama. This drama was full of emotion, I literally cried my eyes out during every episode. I have to applaud the script writers, Egashira Michiru, Oshima Satomi and Yokota Rie for re-telling Kitou Aya's story with so much care and compassion. The main character is a true inspiration.

SPOILER ALERT! Do NOT read any further if you are spoiler free or haven't finished the drama yet....

But if you have or don't really care, please proceed.....;)

Personal Taste was just all over the place for me. The plot didn’t flow naturally. Starting where Kae-In and Jin-Ho fell in love until the end of the drama. All the developments just seemed awkwardly detached and out of place. In particular, Kae-In’s issues should have been addressed earlier so they would have a deeper tie in with the plot. When Kae-In started crying because she was overwhelmed was the memories of her mother’s death, I began to cry too…because Son Ye Jin a brilliant actress. I was not able to fully buy the character’s issues. The mother mystery storyline didn’t help the characters progress any further nor did it really explain why they act the way they do. Why does Kae-In let men walk all over her? Why doesn’t she tell guys to eff off when they screw her over? Is it because she was never able to receive her father’s love and approval, so she must seek out theirs? I wasn’t able to fully understand the characters and I solely blame the writers for that. All the actors did a decent job with the material they were given. However, their acting can only cover up so much of Personal Taste’s flaws. And believe me, it was chalk full of them.

I honestly should have liked this drama more than I actually did. : ( I have been following the gossip on this drama ever since the rumors of Yoon Eun Hye and Joo Ji Hoon being casted as the leads came about a year and half ago. I have been patiently waiting to see this drama come to my screen and I sadly can't help but wonder why I even bothered getting invested. Biggest drama disappointment so far in 2010.

Melodrama does not always equal maturity. Throwing in a bunch of cliché, “never going to happen in a million years” obstacles at one single couple (Xia Tian and Ah Jian) really wasn’t necessary. It did not measure how deep their love was nor did it show how mature they were as characters. If anything, it showed that they did not trust their partner enough to tell them what's really going on. Personal growth starts when you learn to swallow your pride and ask for help. Two heads are always better than one.

(And I really wish that could get across the thick skull of some writers…)

Overall?

I’d rate this drama 2.5/5. And it only got that .5 added on because I thought the first half of the drama was charming.

If you're a Chen Qiao En lover, I'd skip this drama. Go watch The Prince that Turns into a Frog (for a MingEn fix) or Fated to Love You. This drama is not worth your time.

This is one of my first real (non fusion) historical Korean dramas that I’ve watched. So, please pardon my ignorance regarding some subject manners and characters in history.

As a casual viewer of Korean dramas, I thought this drama was interesting…to say the least. It had a lot of controversial undertones for a historical drama- perhaps more than some of the modern ones (dramas) airing today. Even though there were some taboo topics hinted at, teacher/student love and gay themes, I never thought the atmosphere was awkward at all. Surprisingly, I actually thought Moon Geun Young had amazing chemistry with both Moon Chae Won and Park Shin Yang. There were plenty of times I cried for all of these characters, MGY and PSY devotion to each other in particular had me bawling a number of times. And the only other Korean drama I have ever bawled for was the ending of Damo. So, I do have to give my props to this writer, this set of actors and most of all the director for handling this beautiful, emotionally complex story with such elegance and care.

Overall, I rate this drama 7.5/10.
